Who Hates Split Shot? An Alternative

Postby ididcatchonce » Mon Feb 01, 2010 9:57 pm

Hi all,

Those of you that remember before the lead ban was introduced using shot that did not pinch the line, could be moved with ease and used more than once, it was a nightmare when the Non Toxic varieties came on the market. Guaranteed to damage the line, nice and shiny, plus they were not in the least bit soft. In my opinion they still are not much better. I hated them. Various alternatives came and went. The Newark Dart Float with it's pin system, hollow tubes of various materials amongst other innovations. None stood the test of time and all fell by the wayside.

So we all had to use the dreaded Non Toxic stuff. I actually bought every tub of lead shot I could get my hands on and used them for a number of years risking the penalties if I got caught. Eventually I ran out and was forced to use the only available shot. I was still not happy with it and was always looking for something else.

A few years back I found the the answer. Looking through the match anglers armory I stumbled across these little beauties from Preston Innovations.

Designed for the pole angler they lend themselves well to the job. Available in various sizes and are perfect under a Loafer. Match them in size exactly for slow to medium paced swims and go a gram or two over for swims with more pace when holding back hard. The one thing to keep in mind is that as you are tying direct to the Swivol the hooklength needs to be lighter than the main line for safety reasons. It's the best method I have come up with so far to get round the shortcomings of non Toxic Shot.

Alright chap,

Have a look at these beauties.. Use them a lot in my fishing (carp and barbel) and have never looked back...

They have so many uses from pinning the line down behind the lead setup, and using on hooklinks instead of shot... Now i'm guessing that due to them just sliding onto the line and staying in place, these would be a perfect option for you to be able to achieve the sort of setup you have detailed without a fairly bulky lead...

Give them a go, think you will like them ;)

The only down part is they are a little expensive if you go through them as you can't really re-use them :?

The whole point of using these "bulky leads" is that is exactly what I do want when float,

that's what it is Clive   , fishing. How many Korda Sinkers would you need to get up to an 8grm "bulk shotting" pattern :?:

I am not talking about pinning line down behind a lead or the hooklenght to the river/lake bed whilst fishing for Barbel/Carp....

Maybe they might be alright if using a very small pole float on a canal, or in a shirt pattern style for extremely light stick float fishing, although I doubt they would even be heavy enough for that purpose..........

No use on a river at all for the purpose I am describing, except for fine tuning or as a dropper on the hooklength perhaps......

Martin, point taken.. After reading again I feel I may have slightly misunderstood the presentation you are trying to achieve

However, I do feel that your float is all wrong... If you take a look at using one of these you might obtain the right style for the BA, quick interchangeable components mean they will be ideal within flood if the bigger is needed ;)

Hi Chris,

Sure looks that way :)

Those quick change floats are possibly more suitable for the Severn Bore....I think I met him once
